Which Bet to Make
Banker Bet
RecommendedThe statistically best bet in baccarat. The banker wins slightly more than half of all hands due to drawing rules. The 5% commission on winnings accounts for this edge.
Player Bet
RecommendedSlightly worse than banker bet but no commission. Pays 1:1. If you prefer simpler payouts without commission deductions, this is a good choice with a low 1.24% house edge.
Tie Bet
AvoidThe worst mainstream bet in baccarat. Despite the tempting 8:1 payout, the actual probability of a tie is much lower than the payout implies. A 14.36% house edge makes this among the worst casino bets available.
Pair Side Bets
AvoidAvailable at many tables: "Player Pair" or "Banker Pair" pays 11:1 if the first two cards are a pair. Exotic and tempting, but house edge is 10%+ — not recommended for strategic play.
Dragon Bonus

Perfect Pair

Big and Small
Avoid"Big" pays 0.54:1 if 5 or 6 total cards are dealt across both hands. "Small" pays 1.5:1 if exactly 4 cards are dealt. Offered at some live baccarat tables as an extra betting position. Both options carry meaningfully higher house edges than the main Banker bet.
How Baccarat Works
Object of the Game
Bet on which hand — Banker or Player — will have a total closest to 9. Cards are dealt to both, with values as follows: Ace = 1, 2–9 = face value, 10/J/Q/K = 0.
Card Values
Total values over 9 drop the tens digit. So a 7 + 6 = 13, which counts as 3. A 5 + 5 = 10 = 0 (a "baccarat"). This is why 8 and 9 are "naturals" — they can't be beaten by drawing.
Natural Wins
If either hand has 8 or 9 after the first two cards, it's a "natural" and no more cards are drawn. The natural closest to 9 wins. If both have naturals of the same value, it's a tie.
Third Card — Player's Rule
If Player's total is 0–5 after two cards, Player draws a third card. If total is 6 or 7, Player stands.
Third Card — Banker's Rule
More complex. If Banker total is 0–2: always draws. 3: draws unless Player's third card was 8. 4: draws if Player's third card was 2–7. 5: draws if 4–7. 6: draws if 6–7. 7+: always stands. These rules are applied automatically.

Mini-Baccarat
Lower stakes, faster pace. Cards dealt by dealer (not players). Same rules, same odds. Most common version in online casinos.
Chemin de Fer
French variant. Players can take the bank in rotation. Player can choose to draw. Common in European casinos.
Squeeze Baccarat
Live dealer variant. Cards are slowly revealed for drama (the "squeeze"). Same odds. Very popular in high-roller and Asia-facing live games.
Lightning Baccarat
Evolution Gaming variant. Random multipliers (2×–8×) applied to certain card values each round. Higher house edge but more exciting.
Dragon Tiger

No Commission Baccarat
All Banker wins pay even money (1:1) rather than 0.95:1. However, a Banker natural 6 win pays only 0.5:1. Net house edge is slightly higher than standard Banker at ~1.46%. Simpler for players who dislike commission tracking.
Baccarat Banque
A French variant where the banker role is auctioned to the highest bidder and held permanently (or until the bank busts). Players on either side of the table bet against the bank. Less common than Chemin de Fer and rarely found online.
