Self-Exclusion

Session Limit
A time limit on how long you can play in a single session. Licensed casinos must offer this as a responsible gambling tool. Some regulators (e.g. the UKGC) are considering mandatory session breaks.
Scatter Symbol
A special slot symbol that pays anywhere on the reels (not just on paylines) and typically triggers the free spins feature when 3 or more land. The most valuable symbol for triggering bonus rounds.
Soft 17
In blackjack: a hand containing an Ace counted as 11 (e.g. Ace + 6 = soft 17). Some casinos require the dealer to hit on soft 17 (H17 rules) rather than stand — this increases the house edge by approximately 0.2%.
Split (Blackjack)
Dividing a pair into two separate hands, each requiring an additional equal bet. Basic strategy: always split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s.
Stake
The amount of money wagered on a single bet or spin. Multiplied by the win multiplier to calculate payout. Displayed on the slot UI as "Bet" or "Stake" per spin.
Sticky Bonus
A bonus amount that cannot itself be withdrawn — only winnings above the bonus balance can be cashed out. When you withdraw, the sticky bonus amount is forfeited from your balance. Common structure for free spin winnings.
Sticky Wild
A Wild symbol that remains in place for a set number of spins (often free spins), increasing the frequency of wins during that period. Used in Dead or Alive 2, Wanted Dead or a Wild, and others.
Surrender (Blackjack)
An option to forfeit a hand and recover half your stake before play begins. Available at some casinos (Late Surrender). Correct basic strategy move with a hard 16 vs dealer 9, 10, or Ace.
Tilt
A state of emotional or mental frustration that leads to poor gambling decisions — usually triggered by losses. Chasing losses, raising stakes, or playing outside your strategy are signs of tilt. Stop playing when on tilt.
Tie (Baccarat)
A bet that both player and banker hands will total the same. Pays 8:1 but carries a 14.4% house edge. Widely considered the worst bet in baccarat. Never recommended.
True Odds
The actual probability of an outcome before any house edge is applied. Casinos pay less than true odds on all games to generate their profit margin. In roulette, true odds for a single number are 36:1 but the casino pays 35:1.
Tumble / Cascade
A slot mechanic where winning symbols are removed and new symbols fall in from above, potentially creating chain wins in a single spin. Used in Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, and Gonzo's Quest.
Turnover Requirement
See Wagering Requirement. The amount you must wager before bonus funds can be withdrawn. Sometimes calculated as deposit + bonus (e.g. £100 deposit + £100 bonus × 30× = £6,000) vs. bonus-only (£100 × 30× = £3,000). Check which applies.
Table Limit
The minimum and maximum bet permitted at a casino table game. Live roulette minimum bets typically start at £0.50–£1; high-limit rooms accept £500–£10,000 per hand. Slot equivalent is the min/max coin range per spin.
Theoretical Hold (TheoHold)
The expected percentage of wagered money the casino retains over millions of rounds, based on the game's mathematical design. Synonymous with house edge for most purposes. Casinos monitor TheoHold vs actual hold to detect anomalies or advantage play.
Under-Bet
Betting less than the optimal or recommended amount given the expected value. Can leave money on the table when positive EV opportunities exist. Most recreational gamblers under-bet relative to their actual edge.
Upcard
In blackjack: the dealer's face-up card visible to all players. The dealer's upcard determines basic strategy decisions. A dealer 2–6 is a "bust card"; 7–Ace is a strong card.
Unlimited Bonus
A rare bonus type with no maximum win cap — any winnings from the bonus or free spins can be withdrawn in full. The opposite of "capped" bonuses where wins are limited to £5–£20. Increasingly rare as operators manage liability.
Under/Over Bet
A sports betting market predicting whether the total (goals, points, cards etc.) will be above or below a given line (e.g. Over 2.5 Goals). Popular in football, basketball, and American sports. No stake on a winning team needed — purely a totals prediction.
Unlicensed Casino
A gambling operator with no valid licence from a recognised regulator. UK players have no legal protection at unlicensed sites — no ADR access, no fund segregation requirement, no responsible gambling tools. The UKGC can pursue UK-facing unlicensed operators but cannot compel them to pay winnings.
Upside (Bonus Upside)
The maximum theoretical profit from claiming a bonus after completing wagering. Calculated as: (Bonus Amount × RTP^Wager Multiplier) − Expected Losses. On high-wagering bonuses the upside approaches zero — a reason low-wagering and wager-free bonuses have much better player-facing upside.
Underdog (Betting)
The side or player considered less likely to win, reflected in higher decimal odds. Backing underdogs offers larger potential returns at higher risk. Long-term profitable sports bettors often find their edge in underdog markets where bookmaker pricing diverges from sharp market consensus.
Value Bet
A bet where your estimated probability is higher than the bookmaker's implied probability. The foundation of long-term profitable sports betting: only bet when the odds offer positive expected value.
Variance
Statistical measure of how far actual results deviate from the expected value over time. High variance = extreme swings up and down. Low variance = results closer to theoretical RTP. Unrelated to game fairness — it's about the distribution of outcomes.
Vigorish (Vig / Juice)
The bookmaker's commission built into betting odds. On a fair 50/50 market, true odds are 2.00/2.00; a typical sportsbook offers 1.90/1.90, keeping the 5% vig as profit margin regardless of outcome.
VIP Program
A tiered loyalty scheme rewarding high-volume players with cashback, dedicated account managers, faster withdrawals, exclusive bonuses, and sometimes physical gifts. Higher tiers require larger total wagering amounts.
Volatility
For slots specifically: how wins are distributed in size and frequency. Low volatility = frequent small wins, gradual bankroll movement. High volatility = rare big wins, long losing streaks. Extreme volatility = 50,000–150,000× potential, extremely long dry spells.
Validity Period
The window of time in which a bonus, free spins, or promotional offer must be used and its wagering requirements completed. Standard validity is 7–30 days. Bonuses not activated or wagering not met before expiry are forfeited automatically by the casino system.
Video Poker
A casino game combining random electronic card dealing with poker hand rankings. Players choose which cards to hold or discard. With optimal strategy, 9/6 Jacks or Better pays back 99.54% — among the highest RTPs in the casino. Small strategy missteps cause significant RTP loss.
Wagering Requirement

Wild Symbol
A slot symbol that substitutes for most other symbols to help form winning combinations. Types include: Expanding Wild (fills the reel), Sticky Wild (stays for multiple spins), Multiplier Wild (multiplies wins), and Walking Wild (moves one position per spin).
Win Cap
A maximum win limit on promotional free spins — common cap is £5–£20, regardless of actual spin wins. Means a 500× win on a 20p spin during free spins might only pay the £5 cap. Always check the cap before claiming.
Welcome Bonus

Zone (Slot Feature)
