RTP (Return to Player) appears on every slot and casino game but most players do not understand what it really means for their session. We explain it in plain terms — including the parts casino marketing does not mention.
RTP stands for Return to Player. It is expressed as a percentage and represents the proportion of all money wagered on a game that the game pays back to players over a very large number of rounds.
What RTP means in plain terms
A 96% RTP slot returns £96 for every £100 wagered, theoretically. The remaining £4 is the casino's house edge (4%). A 99% RTP video poker game returns £99 for every £100 wagered, giving the casino a 1% edge.
Higher RTP is always better for the player when comparing equivalent games.
What RTP does NOT mean
RTP is not a session guarantee. In a 100-spin session, you will not experience exactly 96% return — you might win £200 or lose £90. RTP is a long-run statistical average calculated over millions of rounds. Individual sessions deviate wildly from the theoretical figure.
RTP is not a per-session return rate. A 96% RTP slot does not mean "you keep 96% of what you start with per session." It means that across all players, all sessions, and all spins, the game pays back 96% of total money wagered.
How RTP interacts with volatility
Two slots with identical 96% RTP can produce completely different session experiences because of different volatility. A low-volatility 96% slot pays small amounts frequently — your balance fluctuates within a narrow range. A high-volatility 96% slot pays large amounts rarely — your balance may drop to zero before recovering in one big win. Same long-run RTP, dramatically different short-run experience.
Where to find a game's RTP
Click the information (i) button in any slot — reputable providers list the certified RTP there. Some online casinos use alternative RTP settings (often called "operator RTP") that are lower than the provider's published figure. Look for the game-specific RTP within the game itself, not just the number advertised by the casino.
