Gambling debt causes significant financial and emotional distress for thousands of UK residents every year. If you are dealing with gambling-related debt, you have legal rights and access to free professional support. This guide explains your options clearly.

Types of gambling debt

Gambling debts typically arise from: credit card balances used for gambling (since the April 2020 ban on credit card gambling, this requires using credit cards to fund e-wallets which are then used at casinos โ€” a breach of most casino terms), personal loans taken to fund gambling or cover losses, money borrowed from family or friends, and overdrafts accumulated through gambling expenditure.

Can gambling debts be written off?

Gambling debts are legally enforceable โ€” creditors can pursue them through the courts. However, there are circumstances where gambling debts may be challenged:

Credit cards used directly for gambling prior to April 2020: Some lenders were found to have irresponsibly extended credit to vulnerable gamblers. The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has upheld complaints in cases where lenders failed adequate affordability checks on credit extended for gambling. If you believe a lender was irresponsible, you can complain to them directly and then escalate to the FOS for free.

Buy-now-pay-later products used for gambling: Similar challenges can be made where BNPL providers failed affordability assessments.

Free debt services in the UK

StepChange Debt Charity (stepchange.org): Free, confidential debt advice. Can set up formal debt management plans, advise on bankruptcy or Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVA), and negotiate with creditors on your behalf. Available online and by phone: 0800 138 1111.

National Debtline (nationaldebtline.org): Free debt advice by phone or webchat: 0808 808 4000.

Citizens Advice: Free debt and financial advice at local offices or online.

Debt Relief Orders (DRO): For debts under ยฃ30,000 with no assets and low income, a DRO can write off qualifying debts after 12 months of compliance. Administered by the Insolvency Service โ€” a debt charity can advise on eligibility.

Protecting yourself from further debt

Self-exclude via GAMSTOP immediately โ€” this prevents gambling at any UKGC-licensed site and removes the temptation and mechanism for further debt accumulation. Contact your bank to block gambling transactions: most UK banks now offer a gambling block (Monzo, Starling, NatWest, Barclays, and others offer this). Request credit limit reductions or account closures with creditors if necessary.
